Position Description

Position Description:

The Health Information Specialist supports the Health Information Management Department operational processes by collecting and preparing documentation for entry into the Electronic Medical Record; scanning and indexing clinical documentation under supervision and providing customer services via phone and fax.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Answer phone, scan and index documents (500 different documents).
• Ensure that HIPAA and legal guidelines are followed in all interactions with patients and handling of the medical record.
• Report issues directly to the Health Information Management Lead.

Requirements

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Basic MS/Office (Word, Excel & Outlook) is required
• 6+ months professional experience in a clerical or administrative role is required.
• 6+ months professional experience in an office setting using the telephone and computer as the primary instruments to perform the job duties.
• 1+ years of customer service experience.
• Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines.
• 1+ years experience with Electronic Medical Records.

Assets:

• Healthcare or insurance benefits are preferred
• Medical Terminology/Coding (ICD-9 and CPT) is preferred
• Hospital, physician, or medical clinical is preferred
• Medicare and/or Medicaid is preferred
• Prior experience with scanning equipment is a plus
• Ability to learn new software IDX, Touchworks, ImpactMD and other clinical software is preferred
• Previous experience in a surgery center is strongly desired.
• Knowledge of State and/or Federal Ambulatory surgery guidelines in strongly desired.
